What's Up

The VIP and Miami Dolphins’ Ronnie Brown!!
The VIP is teaming up with Miami Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown (#23) this fall to address the issue of teen violence in Miami-Dade. He heard about what we are doing and has asked us to help with his “23 Ways to Stop Youth Violence,” a program going into Miami-Dade and Broward middle and high schools. Ronnie also has support from Teen Truth Live, a film production company out of LA that adds a powerful on screen piece to Ronnie’s mission. By starting The Ronnie Brown Project, he wants to show the kids that they have choices, even if they come from challenging environments. Ronnie is using his star power and voice to take his project to the kids and to address issues facing South Florida Youth. The VIP is standing with him as he delivers his message in the schools through film, speeches, and workshops.

Prevent the problem!
Stop the problem before it starts!  The Juvenile Services Department (JSD) has a free program that can help figure out what is bothering kids and recognize the risky behaviors before the child ends up in the juvenile justice system.  The Miami-Dade County Prevention Initiative is a free program for kids 17 and younger who are having behavior and family difficulties and may be at risk of getting arrested.   Some of the things that are dealt with include low academics, drug and alcohol issues, school attendance, runaway problems, anger management, negative peer pressure, disciplinary problems and mental health Issues.   JSD helps to figure out the issues, and then refers the child to agencies and individuals that can give hands on guidance.  The goal is to get involved early, before the arrest, and identify the behavior that could get a kid in trouble and involved with the system.  Sometimes it’s more than just a kid being a kid!  Think this program can help you or someone you know?  Make the contact!  Call 305-755-6286 or e-mail us.

Stop the Violence
- Vanessa R.

Who's going to stop the violence
If we don't?
Youth is the key,
To be all that you can be.
In times of war,
And deprivation,
We need to stay strong in this nation.
Help others,
And expect nothing in return.
Listen and speak,
Take in knowledge,
And then repeat.
Let pressure fade away,
So you can make your own choices.
Get away from the wrong,
And move towards the right.
Stop the violence
Do your part
You might help someone
To a new start.
Tired of hearing say No
take your own decision and go.
Violence, prevention,
What we need is more intervention.
Saying STOP should be your devotion,
Don't mind the corrosion.
Stop the violence not only today
But every day.
Save a life,
Save a soul.
Take control and say No More.
Alone you are one,
But together the future
Every person has a mind
Let yours shine.
Potential leaders of the world,
Stand up and take control!

Clear Voices...Real Choices
Miami-Dade is responding by reaching out to young people, giving them a forum, and listening to what they have to say. Morris Copeland, Deputy Director of Miami-Dade's Department of Juvenile Services, tells Kim Anthony about the Violence Intervention Project, best known by its initials: V-I-P.
